9 - Scholarships


ALA Spectrum - They will offer a $5000 scholarship for anyone of American Native/Alaskan Native, Asian, Black, Hispanic or Pacific Islander racial background.

AMIA Scholarships - They offer a couple $4000 scholarships a year for any student interested in moving image archive management

LITA - They offer a couple $3000 scholarships for anyone interested in librarianship and information technology.

    When taking graduate classes your expenses will be extremely high, and librarian's do not make much money. So if your in librarianship to make money then this job may not be a good investment, rather if it's something you love, go for it.

  • 7- Schools


    As stated above you will need a master's in library science at an accredited college for your best chances at becoming hired. Usually the master's program takes two years, but it may only take a year and a half if you can get 6 of your credits transferred to the new school. Some courses may only require you to go online to take them.

  • 6 - Types of librarians


    Academic Librarians - These types of librarians work for universities and colleges. Their job is to catalog any new material, catalog the university's website and work at a reference desk.

    Independent Information Professionals - These are librarians who work for themselves or run a business in the specialization of information and not in a traditional library environment. These include database information and indexing for information businesses.

    Public Librarians - Public libraries will hire people in various positions, from technical services to children's librarianship.

    School Media Specialists - These are librarians who work in the school environment from kindergarten to 12th grade. They work with teachers as well as students and maintain the whole library in it's everyday needs.

    Special Librarians - These are librarians who work for businesses and not traditional libraries. These librarians are often hires for their specialty in information in field of medical, law libraries, a specialize taxonomist of sorts and more.

  • 5 - What does a librarian do throughout the day?


    Yes, they do checkout books. They also may make giant taxonomies for companies and create new catalogs for a library. They will often organize a multitude of different information.

  • 4 - Various tips


    Learn about your state's certification requirements. Get in contact with your graduate school for their requirements. Go for a master's degree while keeping a high g.p.a. Sometimes they require learning a second language. You may need reference from part-time jobs and volunteering from previous library jobs.

  • 3 - What is Required?


    Besides the fact that you must absolutely love books and information. The usual requirement for a librarian is a master of library science degree. While most librarian positions require an ALA-accredited MLS, rural areas and smaller places will accept non-mls librarians. Some states will also require you to have a teaching certificate as well.
